What is an altnet? Independent full fibre explained

By Chris Davies · Updated

Quick answerAn altnet ("alternative network") is an independent company building its own full fibre network rather than using Openreach or Virgin Media. Examples include Hyperoptic, Community Fibre, Gigaclear, Trooli and Wildanet. Altnets often offer faster symmetrical speeds and lower prices, but only cover the areas they've built.

How altnets fit in

Most UK broadband brands rent lines from Openreach (BT's network arm) or run on Virgin Media's network. Altnets dig or string their own fibre, usually in specific towns, cities, blocks of flats or rural areas, and either sell broadband directly or let other providers use their network.

Altnets build modern full fibre networks, which are generally very reliable. As with any provider, check reviews and support options.

Can I switch from BT to an altnet?

Yes. One Touch Switch lets your new provider arrange the switch across different networks.

Are altnets cheaper?

Often, especially for high speeds, but compare prices including any price rises.
