How to switch broadband provider (step-by-step)

By Chris Davies · Updated

Quick answerCheck whether you're still in contract, choose a new deal, then let the new provider handle the switch. Under Ofcom's One Touch Switch process you usually don't need to contact your old provider at all. Most switches take around two weeks, and new full fibre installs can take longer.

1. Check your current contract

Look up your contract end date in your account or on a recent bill. Providers must tell you when your contract is ending and show you their best deals. If you leave early you may pay an early termination charge, often the remaining monthly fees.

2. Compare deals for your address

Use your postcode and exact address, because availability varies street by street. Compare the monthly price, any set-up fee, contract length and the price rises written into the contract.

3. Order with your new provider

Since September 2024, Ofcom's One Touch Switch process lets your new provider arrange the switch across different networks, including from copper to full fibre or between different full fibre networks. Your new provider contacts your old one, and the old service ends when the new one goes live, so you shouldn't be left without broadband.

4. Installation

5. After you switch

Return your old router if asked (check the instructions, as some providers charge if you don't). Run a speed test near the new router and check your first bill.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to cancel my old broadband?

Usually not. With One Touch Switch your new provider arranges the switch and your old service is cancelled automatically. Check the new provider confirms it is handling the switch.

How long does it take to switch broadband?

Typically about two weeks. If you need a new full fibre line installed, it can take longer depending on engineer availability.

Will I be without internet when I switch?

In most cases no, or only for a short time on the switchover day. Your old service is designed to stop when the new one starts.

Can I switch broadband if I'm in contract?

Yes, but you may have to pay early exit fees. Some providers offer credit to cover these, so check before ordering.
