Broadband for working from home
Working from home puts different demands on broadband than streaming or browsing. Video calls, cloud files and remote desktops all need a connection that's reliable in both directions.
Upload speed matters as much as download
Most packages advertise download speed, but on a video call you're also sending video. A typical HD call uses 3-4Mbps each way. Older copper and fibre-to-the-cabinet lines often upload at only 1-20Mbps, which struggles when several people are on calls or files are syncing. Full fibre usually gives far higher uploads, often matching the download speed.
How much speed do you need?
- One person, calls and email: 30-70Mbps is usually plenty.
- Two remote workers plus family streaming: aim for 150Mbps or more, with good upload.
- Large files, video editing or self-hosting: 500Mbps+ full fibre.
Reliability and backup
Home packages don't guarantee repair times. If your income depends on being online, consider a 4G backup connection, which switches over automatically if the line fails, or a business SLA with a committed fix time. See business options.
Fix your WiFi too
A spare room or garden office is often far from the router. Mesh WiFi or a wired connection makes sure the speed you pay for actually reaches your desk.
